The Road Less Traveled to The World Equestrian Games -a horse and rider tip blog by Chester Weber Strong like Horse: Conditioning tips August 13 it became official! The USEF named its US Driving Team combinations for WEG and for owners Jane Clark and myself, we couldnt be prouder of our horses. Meet your US team: Boris W, Boy W, Para, Splash, and Uniek. My three are Boris W, a 2006 KWPN gelding; Boy W, a 2000 Royal Dutch gelding, and Para, a 1997 Royal Dutch gelding. Joining them are Janes horses Splash, a 2003 Dutch Warmblood gelding and Uniek, a 2001 Royal Dutch Warmblood gelding. It goes without saying that the real conditioning for a goal like this begins months or years in advance. They had to be in condition to win last summers Test Event for WEG in Caen and the goal ever since has been to maintain that peak condition for now. Generally, that includes an easy 20-kilometers through forest (our version of trail riding), followed by a day training on Cones, a day focusing on Dressage, and marathon course and distance training once or twice a week. Mix it up. Cross-training for minds is as important for bodies. Ill schedule days when the horses are ridden under saddle or driven to a single. As we get closer to WEG, Im going to make it a point of working the horses on the same arena surfaces as well encounter during the Games. File that under my attention to little details, but I think its essential for the horses to get comfortable and work up on the same footing theyll have to compete on. Caen, here we come.
