Aloha, I wanted to share the interview I did yesterday about my photography, so heres the link if you missed it live: https://youtube/watch?v=dOjMDWtXUag&list=UUZ5BKpljxXj4Y8Ut164GnSg Its crazy when you do something like this because it makes you reflect on the journey that you have been on. This last year has been a whirlwind, especially when it comes to moving forward with opportunities in photography. When you are so deep in the whirl there often isnt time to reflect or enjoy the breath of the wind, but this interview gave me that chance to look back, so thank you Donna Blanchard for giving me the opportunity to be on your show on ThinkTech Hawaii. I want to recap many of things that happened in my photography world over this year to really give thanks to those who made it all happen - this may be a long post because so many of you have given me opportunities. Last January I was standing on some rocks above Waimea Bay during one of the biggest swells Hawaii has seen in many years, trying to capture it through the lens, but I was also being an idiot in a place I knew I shouldnt be. Needless to say a giant wall of water nailed me into the rocks, destroyed all my camera gear and slit open my head. I recovered fine, but had to recoup the loss of the gear (still doing so) and eventually decided to seriously upgrade my camera body to a dream camera capable of more than what I had previously imagined. I made a pact with myself that in doing so I would put myself out there more with photography. Then things started to happen. A year earlier I had gotten my feat wet with volunteer event photography shooting for Sustainable Coastlines Hawaiis fundraiser, and in doing so met Kahi Pacarro who returned the favor by getting me in a helicopter not once, but twice with the extremely generous Kris Gourlay to photograph beach cleanups with an aerial perspective - experiences that not only expanded my portfolio and helped take conservation efforts to wider audience, but were just thrilling life adventures. Not long after that a close friend from my baseball world, Jesse Hoorelbeke & J. Alan Paul Photography came to Hawaii to shoot a wedding which he involved me in as a second shooter. A week with Jesse changed everything, taking my abilities and giving them so much more depth - his generosity in knowledge gave me a knew edge for working with people and light. As I mention in the interview I am lucky to be surrounded by this crazy freakish group of talented humans and friends who pursue their passions and inspire others to do the same, so I began clicking shutters at them... Elizabeth Hope Davis & Dan Amato with their fire dancing, all my musically gifted circle: Cynthia Lai Phil Potter Todd Beiler Sean Croucher Anna Kat Andrew Alt Cynth & the Whats His Faces Foreseeable Futures String Cynthesis; my beautiful underwater mermaid freediving, surfing, bodysurfing, adventuring, swimming, and yogaing ladies: Kara Miller Emily Crigler Rachel Schackne Tammy Smith, Jade, Courtney, Erin Zanre. I got the opportunity to see new places in staying with Mark William Chynoweth & Laura Berbusse who put up with me as I shot thousands of pictures in southern Utahs eye blitzing National Parks. I was invited to dive with sharks by Ocean Ramsey & OneOcean Diving and got some great shots with Chelsea Yamase that opened a new world and again connected my work with conservation (my other deep passion). After getting all this experience then the gates opened even more when I met Melina Lillios who upon seeing my portfolio invited me to be her tour photographer for @Live Laugh Love Tours to Greece - a trip that changed my life and fulfilled a dream of being a travel photographer. Not long after I was approached by Haley Bergere to be a RAW: natural born artists at Raw Honolulu which gave me the opportunity to display my work to a wider audience. Then in the last couple months I combined my work with Surfrider Foundation - Oahu Chapter to help create a theme of #PreservingSacredPlaces for the John Kelly Awards which used my photography to connect our audience with all these amazing places around Oahu that communities and organizations are working hard to preserve for generations into the future. Stuart H. Coleman helped get my pictures and an article into Green Magazine Hawaii and friend Matt McDole invited me to photograph for a story he was doing about Timothy Lara and his paddle company in Maui. A recent volunteer event shoot opened up more doors - Matthew Lynch asked me to shoot Summit Fests opening night where I met Donna whom I did this interview with yesterday and also met the beautiful Robyn Chance PageOne who in being comfortable in front of a camera added another level of depth and courage to my shooting skills. Finally, throughout this I have been supported by an amazing network thousands of miles away who have purchased prints, provided advice, and encouraged me to keep going with photography: Eric Holtz Lucille Ueltzen Anderson Elana Schwartz Amitai Schwartz Adam Harwood Jeff Shaw Alex Ray Brian JamesJason EdelsteinJordan BeckermanAaron ApplefieldCindy BargerLauren WetzellShell EisenbergChuck BabbittAmanda Breen DaleSabra Buel della LuciaDan OBrien and truly so many more!
