Aloha from Kona, Today was a race simulation day. Swim/Bike/Run routine to practice transitions and get comfortable on the bike in a wet race suit. It is also the start of the carbohydrate loading phase of training (my favorite thing). Everything you avoid eating while training to stay lean, you eat now. Pancakes. pizza, and French toast are my favorites. The purpose of carb loading is to pack your muscles and liver with energy producing glycogen. During the long weeks and months of endurance training before the race, your body learns how to take that glycogen from the muscles and mix fat and muscle to establish a more consistent, efficient, longer lasting burn. This is why ironman athletes and go for so long. Tonight, the meal is on Ironman at the athlete welcome dinner. All of the food is super high in carbs and calories. It is amazing how much food the athletes will put down tonight. The mood will be relaxed with a sprinkling of holy crap, the race is in just 2 days. Tomorrow will be a very mellow day of training. Mostly just to get loose and check out all of my gear to make sure everything is in good shape. Last year, I had a cleat break on my bike shoe as I was clipping in on Friday morning. I ended up having to get a bran new pair of cycling shoes for the race. The first time I ever wore the new shoes was in the race. Could have been a disaster but it worked out just fine. Mahalo
