Alright football fans. It was another great day of World Cup action, but tonights edition of Football Fan Forum will be unique. Lets get started. Vocabulary: Golden Goal: In a tournament such as the World Cup, if it is an elimination (aka knockout) match, a draw is not possible - there must be a winner. When the full 90 minutes are played, if it is tied, they played a 15 minute overtime period. If its still tied, they will take a 5 minute rest and then play an additional 15 minutes. If there is still no winner, the teams will each take 5 penalty kicks and whoever has more goals, will win. Every now and then, there is still a tie and there is an indefinite period of sudden death; this is called Golden Goal - because a goal ends the match Goal Kick: A ball that goes over the goal line, but not for a goal, and was last touched by an offensive player, a goal kick is the result. The goalkeeper will then place the ball on the ground in front of him and pass the ball as short or as long as he wishes to a teammate. Corner Kick: A ball that goes over the goal line, but was last touched by a defensive player, a corner kick is the result. The ball is placed at one of the corners near the goal and a player will kick the ball to a teammate, usually in front of the goal. Biting: There is no double meaning or football term here. Biting means using your teeth to actually bite an opponent. You can check out Luis Suarez to learn more about this. It is not at all normal to see this and frankly, you must be a nutcase to do it. Strategy: Set pieces are important. Set pieces are plays where the ball is set still on the ground and a player kicks it without any defenders allowed to harass him. The players set up a play (hence the term set piece) in an effort to create a goal scoring chance. General Thought: Some teams excel at attacking set pieces or defending against them. Some players such as Miroslav Klose of Germany routinely display a knack for using head shots off set pieces like corner kicks. You can YouTube him and see some of his ability. Likewise, other players such as Mexicos Rafael Marquez excel at stopping set piece attacks. These players are invaluable as they are frequently the difference between winning and losing since set pieces result in so many goals.
