Alright here I Go ! About Two years ago I floated this Idea in a Post on the Patch website. An unsoliticited comment from my wifes Boss ( She said that she and mark thought Its A Great Idea ) Bolstered my confidence in the belief that it Really Is A Great Idea ! So please read and take a minute to digest, Then let me know what You think ! Everyone in town has heard how Cramped The Town Office building is right ? And we also know that theyre are issues that Need to be addressed with the Elementary School in order it to be up to Educational standards in its current capacity as a School ( Key word there is SCHOOL ). Different plans have floated around about what to do with the Town Office property after either a New Bldg. is Built or the old NAHARA adapted for Municipal Space. We all know what will eventually happen Dont we ? Most likely it would fall in to the hands of the goodspeed Foundation ( They would Never want to lose such convenient parking for their patrons ) Which would Keep this Valuable Real Estate Off the Tax Rolls ( who cares,Were Flush with cash Right ? ) Though,and here comes the meat of this idea, I dontt propose to sell it, I say find a willing developer thats NOT a Non-Profit Foundation and give them a 99 year lease,While Taxing them at the Full Rate ( No Tax Abatements to be included ) This would, I think, garner Many Offers as this property is Choice Ct.River frontage,CHOICE ! Good Tax money there, Wouldnt you think ? Next lets turn our attention to the Old High School ( OUR H.S ) Costs of rehabbing most of this structure would most likely be Prohibitive,so I submit, Tear down the entire Ray section as well as Most of the Older Nathan Hale section, With the Exception of the Most Iconic Part. The Front that faces Plains Rd ( In My day this held The Library,The Cafeteria in the basement,and numerous class rooms ) Make the seperation along the entry to the old Senior Hallway, You know where im talking about ? I Know you will if you went to school there ! Anyway, after that you build a NEW Elementary School on the same spot,Connected to this remaining structure Which could now be the Home of the Board of Ed Offices In Lieu of Renting the space they are currently in. Im still so far away from the end, so bear with me please ! This would now Free Up the Old Elementary School for the .....Yup, Town OFFice Building ( Which BTW would put it smack Dab in the geographic Center of town ) Very Little money would need to be spent converting it for Office use Far less than what would be spent Updating it for Pupils ! Building The New Elementary school on the old H.S site would be dollar for dollar a More cost effective way than More Bandaides With declining enrollments we could build what we actually Need,with a plan for incremental expansion if the trend changes in the future. Also In the Green climate that we now find ourselves in,I believe that we could Salvage most of the bricks ( some outside contactor most certainly would for his profit ) and reuse them in the facade of the New Elem.School as a Nod to Our Past ( cool dont You Thimk ? ) Which would be no more costly ( maybe even realizing a savings after the associated costs of salvaging them ) Im Really not Finished, But My Head hurts !! :) Let me know what you think of what I have said so far !
