Alrighty, update time! Are you ready for this?? Might be a little long... Amelia first: She had her opthalmology consult yesterday. She was born with an eye condition called intermittent exotopia (basically a sometimes lazy eye). Well now its not sometimes its always, and her right eye is now also affected. She needs surgery on both eyes. Good news is that its outpatient and a 2 week recovery time. We will be scheduling that tomorrow. Now for brody: The neurosurgeon came in and said that his MRI was worrisome. After updating her on his new symptoms those were of course also worrisome. She showed us the MRI and that he has developed a syrinx (a fluid filled cyst on the spinal cord) which is a tell tale sign of a retether in and if left untreated can grow and be dangerous to his health. However, its still pretty small right now. She said she would be happy to take the aggressive approach and operate now, but we all decided to take a watch and wait approach. Brody will have a repeat MRI the beginning of december and a follow up appointment on December 11th. We will also schedule a new spine xray and a follow up with the orthopedic surgeon to check on his scoliosis. If anything is worse in December we will go right in for surgery. Of course we will be watching him like a hawk with the help of his physical therapist for any sudden changes. If he does have any changes before December we will go in for surgery right away. We chose this approach because of brodys awesomeness and ability to be completely unique, in other words because his body is so complicated and reacts so badly to surgery. I am very grateful for a surgeon that listens to us and has brodys best interest in mind instead of just wanting to cut. We have his urology appt next wed for that surgery still, but Im not as worried about that, its easy peasy compared to the spine surgery.
