Also, my angst about this film. Im cautiously optimistic but it keeps coming up, that fear that folks will laugh but not REALLY get the message, assuming there is one (that isnt beholden to the sensibilities of yt peoples feelings and coddling them while making fun of them, or rather, the institutions and the clash of culture): It is a mistake to assume that challenging Whiteness, satirizing Whiteness, and making fun of Whiteness leads to a deeper valuing of Blackness. There are many Black people who are frustrated by Whiteness, but this is not connected to an interest in, or pursuit of, valuing Blackness. It is the access to Whiteness, not the valuing of Blackness that holds the thrust for them. I’m afraid that this is going to be the case with Dear White People. We will have droves of Black people heading to the movies to see a film that is essentially about the un-affirming, un-empowering, un-welcoming experience of being a “Black face in a White space,” but how many of those Black people will recognize the value and importance of those spaces in our society, those Black spaces, that are affirming, empowering, and welcoming to Black students? The Historically Black Colleges and Universities that we consistently take for granted. ~~~The Anti-Intellect Blog
