Although I have seen both black and brown bears in the wild (never a polar bear yet), it was rather humbling to be this close to such a powerful predator. There sizes vary depending on geographic location, as coastal brown bears, such as the Kodiak subspecies can easily way over 1000 lbs and be between 7 - 10 feet in length. The grizzly in the video is substantially smaller, but still an impressive animal at the top of the food chain. It is estimated that tens of millions of American Buffalo (Bison) were exterminated during the course of the North American western expansion in the nineteenth century. Unlike the white settlers, the first nations/native people respected and used the bison for meat, clothing and only killed when required. It was a wonderful experience to see them roaming as free as they can be, just like in centuries past. The wolves are a most formidable adversary, whittling the weak from the strong and being tenacious in chasing and wearing down their prey; sometimes travelling up to fifty miles for a meal. Their bite force can be up to 1500 pounds per square inch, compared to around 300 pounds per spare inch of a human. The video shows an ex-alpha wolf now being ostracized by the pack as he is no longer in charge. They are incredibly intelligent and social animals as can be seen on the video in them wanting to see what is going on and trying to find where they now stand in the hierarchy.
