Although most people use the adjective Socratic to mean a fairly simply sort of Q&A process, for me the deeper meaning of Socratic is the mutual commitment to work towards a consistent and coherent understanding of the world. This means that we should always be open to discovering ways in which our current understandings include inconsistencies and incoherencies. From this perspective, Socratic interactions are those in which we mutually acknowledge our responsibilities to examine all of the propositions on which our worldviews are based, and share a commitment to work together in dialogue to reduce the extent to which we hold inadequately grounded beliefs. This is why I emphasize Socratic Practice, in the sense of a lifelong commitment to engage others in honest dialogue in which we continuously work towards a more adequate understanding of the world.
