Although playing cards have a long history, probably originating in China, todays modern playing cards are based on a design by Thomas de la Rue. Thomas was a printer from Guernsey who moved to London in 1816 and set up a business making straw hats! By 1830 he had left the hat trade and started up a printing business which produced its first deck of cards in 1832. The Museum Of Gaming now has about 10 sets of De La Rue cards from various times including the 1920s De La Rue Bezique set, pictured below. De La Rue, the only licensed producer of playing cards at the time, sold the rights to Waddingtons in 1969. The company still exists but now prints security documents such as as passports, driving licenses, stamps and bank notes.
