Although the National Anti-Corruption Commission will petition the National Legislative Assembly to impeach ex-PM Yingluck for negligence for failing to stop corruption and losses in her governments rice-pledging scheme, impeachment will be an own goal for the nation, drive us even further apart, and make us the laughingstock of the world. Impeachment is to remove the person from office; but how do you remove a person who is no longer in a post? Rightly or wrongly, millions of Thais believe that she is being persecuted on political grounds, and any impeachment will reinforce that belief -- to what end? Also, it will not be easy to convict her, for if she was negligent, was it because (a) she lacked the expertise to decide what steps to take, and to monitor results, or (b) she had the expertise but willfully and with criminal intent, did not act? Even her own party never showcased the neophytes skills, for their election poster proclaimed, Thaksin (sic) thinks, Pheu Thai acts -- with no mention of the candidate. If we elected an incompetent, whose fault is it? The NLA may have the legal authority to impeach a person whos no longer in the office, but what is legal is not always wise. Drop the case.
