Although we had the record discharge date, the average length of stay still may remain the same for Charlie. Unfortunately, he had to be readmitted yesterday. Regardless of when you leave the hospital, it is more common than not that kids get readmitted post TP-AIT for one complication or another. This is all part of that lengthy consent we had to sign. They laid out all of the potential complications including the statement “we do so few of these surgeries in small children that there may be complications that arise that are unforeseen.” We prepared both boys when we left the hospital that we may have to come back. We prayed not to be back obviously but we also prayed that if complications arose that they would only be minor setbacks. We continue to hold on to that hope. We enjoyed being home for the short time we were there. Even had our spreadsheet of the 20+ meds given more than that many times a day finalized and were getting into somewhat of a routine. Charlie had increased pain that started Wednesday evening and during the night these pains became severe accompanied with vomiting. We rode it out at home for as long as we could but he was in bad shape so brought him in around noon yesterday. He has 3 different things contributing to his pain. 1. He has a small intussusception (a part of his bowel telescopes over itself intermittently). Dr. C thinks this will resolve on its own over the next few days but there is a small chance this is something that would require another surgery. When this happens the pain he has is so intense that no amount of pain meds can relieve it. 2. He has a really bad bladder infection, likely from having the catheter after surgery. And 3. His stomach still isn’t emptying at all causing him a lot of discomfort if we don’t suction it constantly. Seeing him in so much pain again is horrible but we are hoping things will turn around quickly and we will be back out the door. Fortunately, Roger’s mom arrived back in town just in time to help us. We were hoping to spend more time with her outside the hospital but extremely appreciative to have her help during this setback. We will get through this. At least we had a brief chance to all be together at home. Now, we are more prepared when we leave this time for the intense medication regimen at home. All things considered, we are just 2 weeks out of a major surgery and he has come a long ways! Please pray that Charlie does not require another surgery and that he will be back to himself again soon. We appreciate all of your prayers! #TeamCharliehasgotthis #Day14 #Itsallpartofthejourney
