Always something good comming from Bjørn Lomborg: Biofuels - TopicsExpress

Always something good comming from Bjørn Lomborg: Biofuels may not cut *any* CO₂, yet it plows up conservation lands and virgin lands, while driving up food prices and causing starvation around the world. This is an ecological disaster, said Craig Cox with the Environmental Working Group. A whopping 5 million acres of conservation land have been plowed by farmers trying to produce more corn. 1.2 million acres of virgin land in Nebraska and the Dakotas alone have been converted to fields of corn and soybeans since 2006. The White House blocked a a Department of Agriculture official to speak with Associated Press. And of course, this does not at all begin to address the fact that biofuels increase the cost of food around the world so that at least 30-120 million more will starve in 2020. (p132, fao.org/docrep/014/i2280e/i2280e.pdf) Id have to think really hard to come up with a scenario where [biofuel is] a net positive, concludes Silvia Secchi, a Southern Illinois University agriculture economist.
