Am _really_ looking forward to seeing the film Selma that is now - TopicsExpress

Am _really_ looking forward to seeing the film Selma that is now in theatres nationwide... but am saddened to hear the character of LBJ is not historically accurate. But am confused as to where, exactly, the inaccuracy is... has anyone seen this yet and, to what degree, do you find the movie historically accurate/inaccurate? So (from what I can see) the film has LBJ telling King not to go forward with the march from Selma because it will be open season on protesters. While the real truth is that LBJ _wanted_ that march from Selma so he could get the support he needed to pass the voting rights act: is that right? It doesnt sound (at least from reading) that LBJ is being portrayed as someone who was against signing into law the voting rights act but, rather, instead someone who was pragmatically wrestling with the right time to promote this legislation in order for it to be successfully accepted and written into law. Is this correct? If this is all correct, it doesnt seem like the film has deviated from the truth that much to have created all this controversy thats being discussed in the media. (The truth being that there was a strong complex relationship going on between King and LBJ and they both wanted the voting rights act to be law but just had different opinions about what it would take to successfully make that happen.) Will find out more after seeing... it just sounds like such a powerful movie and I hope this (what appears to be) minor controversy doesnt stop it from getting the rightful awards that seem like should be coming their way... politico/magazine/story/2014/12/what-selma-gets-wrong-113743.html#.VLIY1OktFD-
