Amadou Diallo February 4, 1999 Bronx, NY A 2000 issue of TIME summarized the case of Amadou Diallo perfectly in just three words: “Cops. Brutality & Race.” Four New York City police officers, all in street clothes, fired 41 shots at an unarmed Diallo, a 23-year-old immigrant from Guinea, on the stoop of his building. He was struck 19 times by the white officers, who believed he had a gun. Evidently, it turned out to be a wallet. After deliberating for three days, a jury of 12 acquitted the officers of all charges. Diallo later received a multi-million dollar settlement in a civil lawsuit.
