Amara Enyia and I and a number of other independent candidates filed late this afternoon (thats her uncle in the picture, btw). Seeing all of us there, Im reminded of a story of a young Ab Mikvas encounter with a grizzly ward committeman in the 8th ward... As a law student at U of C, he decided he wanted to help out in the Douglas and Stevenson campaigns back in 1948. Upon entering the Regular Democratic Organization office he asked if he could help. Following a moment of silence, the cigar-chompin committeman said, Who sent you?. To which Ab answered, Nobody. To that the committeman said We dont nobody nobody sent. When I see all of us independents who are running against the entrenched incumbents of the new political machine, I think of us in the words of that long ago committeeman. We ARE the nobodys that nobody sent and if ever there was a time that this city needed the nobodys that nobody sent, it certainly is now. We can make a difference not just in how our wards are run but also in how this city is run. We can change the politics of plutocracy that has encompassed this city for over 175 years and bring in a fresh lake breeze of democracy. And... we can resurrect the dreams and politics of the late Harold Washington, which were dashed by his untimely death. On February 24th, 2015 the citizens of this ward and the city of Chicago will have the opportunity to make all of this happen. Until then support your Nobodys and volunteer to make our message heard. If you do, then we will win!
