Amarnath Yatra begins amid tight security Posted on: June 27, 2013 Jammu: The much-awaited Amarnath Yatra kicked off on Thursday with the first batch of pilgrims departing from here for the Holy Cave. The yatra began amid claims from central agencies of a terror threat looming on the pilgrimage. Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde had spoken of intelligence inputs regarding terror threat to the yatra, but Chief Minister Omar Abdullah denied any such possibility. The Jammu and Kashmir Police have meanwhile taken "extra precautions" to ensure a safe and sound pilgrimage. As per last update, nearly three lakh people had registered for the annual yatra. "Whatever is required from the security point of view is being done. All necessary measures are being taken. Extra precautions are being taken to ensure that there are no untoward incidents," IGP, Jammu, Rajesh Kumar, had said earlier. Asked about the additional deployment of forces in view of the recent attack on the Army convoy in Srinagar, the IGP said, "During the yatra there is always an additional deployment of the forces and this time around it is no different." Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Jammu, Atul Goel, said high level of security will be maintained at the spot registration counters at Saraswati Dham, Vaishnavi Dham and Jammu Haat.
