On this day in 1947, India was freed from hundreds of years of British rule, thus inaugurating the worlds largest democracy. This was made possible through the non-violent resistance and civil disobedience movements led by the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru became the first Prime Minister of India and raised the tricolour flag on 15th August 1947.
