Amarumayo is a project of social and environmental safeguard that aims to protection and promotion of Amazon traditional medicine and its related cultural environment both at local and international level.Amarumayo main purposes are: • creation of ethnobotanic free reserve of medicinal plants for local curanderos • creation of a seeds bank to safeguard and to promote the knowledge of all the variety of plants contained in the reserve • creation of an official net of local curanderos of verify reliability•Creation of new projects with local schools aiming to safeguard and promote local medicine • organization of seminars • creation of research settings, studies and diffusion of collected data mainly trough publications and conventions. Amarumayo (literally “snakes river”) is the name given by Inca people to the river “Madre de Dios”, that gives the name also to the whole region in south east Peru, close to Brazil and Bolivia border.Nowadays the “Madre de Dios” is one of the place in the world with the higher biodiversity level but it is also a region with the highest rate of environmental risk that turns into cultural emergency when it affects this place where culture and nature are so strongly connected. The link between nature and culture is particularly clear in traditional medical practices, based on the use of unique local plants.In the last years, the irresponsible and indiscriminate depletion of local resources – first of all wood and gold –is irreparably compromising the biological equilibrium and the humane culture that is manifestation and example of harmonious bond between man and nature in this place.Every year, thousands of square miles of wood are destroyed for the creation of illegal gold mines and for illegal wood traffic. River pollution, due to irresponsible disposal of mercury used in mines that is seriously affecting river’s fauna and the related food chain, the depletion of child labor, children traffic and prostitution are only a few of the innumerable side effects generated by the total absence of respect for human life that is affecting Madre De Dios.Today International and local authorities are ineffective and inefficient and sometime even connivent, totally unable to contrast this situation that is leading to the devastation of a biologic and cultural estate of inestimable value. AMARUMAYO project aims to intervene moving trough 2 different levels: the environmental level and the cultural level, promoting the knowledge trough a prospect of integration, both at international and local level, of one of the bigger treasure worldwide: the medical culture and biodiversity, still partially unknown, that we are guiltily abandoning to a destiny of destruction. Objectives: • environmental safeguard contrasting deforestation • safeguard of social and cultural environment•Promotion and spreading of information concerning medical practices within new generations • promoting research in local traditional medicine • conservation and diffusion of verified evvective plants Interventions: • creation of ethnobotanic reserve of medicinal plants • creation of a seeds bank • projects with schools • seminars and conventions at local and International level • partnerships with research centers, association etc • creation of a net of local curanderos•stable publications
