Pinecones are one of the best natural weather indicators. The scales of a pinecone open out when the weather is dry and close up when the air is humid --- a good sign that rain is coming. The natural state of the cone is closed --- the scales are shriveling up when it is dry. When the air is moist, the cone become flexible again and returns to its regular shape. Trees are also involved in longer-term weather predictions. According to an old English saying:If the oak flowers before the ash, we shall have a splash. If the ash flowers before the oak, we shall have a soak. Why do some flowers close their petals before it rains? Many flowers whose petals are wide open during sunny weather will close up when it rain it approaching. It is thought that this response is designed to stop rain-washing pollen away. The petals of the Morning Glory act in a similar way – with wide open blooms indicating fine weather and shut petals predicting rain and bad weather. Scarlet Pimpernel, which has been called the poor man’s weather glass. This is because its flowers open in sunny weather, but close tightly when rain is expected. Plants, of course, have no sense to know what they are doing. Their changes are triggered by outside factors such as gravity, temperature, water and chemicals. We do not know what triggers the changes that cause a flower to open and close. One factor may be sunlight, another may be temperature. Many plants go through mysterious changes every 24 hours, almost like clockwork. Certain flowers will close up at night, even when they are placed under a brilliant sunlamp. FACTS --- People have forecasting the weather for thousands of years based on changes seen in the world around them. Many such observation are little more than folklore and superstitions, but it is true that certain plants and animals can detects variation in the air that people cannot, providing us with the natural sign of change in the weather. Plants change their colour – Man can learn forecasting the weather.
