Amazing capitalism.... It was a moment of awe. I was simply amazed by the sights, sound, smells and emotions of the moment. It was January 21, 2007 and 57,000 others witnessed the experience. The Indianapolis Colts fell behind 21-3 to the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship game in Indianapolis. As the Colts were getting their head handed to them on a platter, my mind wandered. There were thousands of fans wearing numbered jerseys of their favorite players and the best I could tell each jersey had a price tag of about $75. How did this happen? How could 50,000+ random people become so united over a group of unassociated players, that they would be willing and able to spend that kind of money on their wardrobe to attend a game that must have cost more per seat than the jerseys? It was a capitalistic success story that is beyond explanation. Don’t get me wrong, I understand Pop Warner football and why people show up at those games as well as high school games. College games make a lot of sense to me, but the rabid following of professional sports is mind boggling. The marketing of the franchises within professional athletics have done a remarkable job making their brand successful and their followers loyal. All I can say is, let’s go COLTS!! kt
