THE boos rang around Ashton Gate every time he touched the ball. Now Richard Foster will use memories of his Bristol City return to prove he’s not the flop Robins fans believe he is. The right-back’s horror 18-month spell in the West Country was capped by relegation from the Championship last term. And he got the welcome he feared when he went back there with Rangers last Saturday. Foster — who played in Wednesday’s 1-0 win over German minnows FC Gutersloh — said: “The fans’ reaction in Bristol wasn’t nice. “You think you’ll maybe get it for 15 or 20 minutes but it went on for the whole game. It didn’t help, my performance was terrible. “But it’s part and parcel of football. I was part of a squad that got relegated, so they maybe hold that against me. “It makes you want to show them you’re better than they think. “I was just trying too hard. I got it in my head I had something to prove when I don’t think I really did. “Every time you have a bad game you can’t wait until the next one to try to get it out of your system — and I felt like I did that against Gutersloh.” As tough as his City spell under boss Derek McInnes was to take, Foster reckons he’s a better player for it. He added: “When I went down there, we were in a relegation fight. It was a change and refreshing. “Results-wise it was tough, but I was still enjoying being in the Championship. “We started last year well. But once we got into another relegation fight it wasn’t enjoyable losing every week. “Then when a new manager came in, my face just didn’t fit.” Foster’s competitive debut for Gers during his previous loan spell was against Valencia in the Champions League. This time he could kick off as a trialist in the Ramsdens Cup tie with Albion Rovers on Sunday week. Foster, one of seven summer arrivals, said: “I’m one of the oldest in the squad now but the quality is up there. “Lewis MacLeod and Fraser Aird have stood out. They’re top players. “Could some hold their own in the squad I was part of before? “I think so. I’ve been pleasantly surprised with the quality here. “It’s difficult to make comparisons because we had lots of international players before. “But I think this squad would compare with an SPL squad.” Gers have won all four pre-season games without conceding a goal. French-Tunisian trialist Bilel Mohsni has played a huge part in steadying the ship. Gers travel to Dutch second-tier side Emmen tomorrow before jetting back to Glasgow chris
