Amber is the Nordic gold, a stone to admire. In Norse mythology, Freya, (goddess of beauty and love) lost her true love. It is said that as she wanders the world, she continues weeping. The teardrops which fall into the sea turn into teardrops of Amber. Millions of years ago, when land was under water, the climate was warm and humid. The pine-like trees formed large quantities of resin, which were collected in blobs. Big rivers washed resin clumps into the sea, where they sank to the bottom with clay. Over the next millions of years, resin petrified and became amber! In the Baltic Sea region, there are great opportunities for finding amber on the beach, especially after a storm has passed. It is gathered with sticks, pieces of wood and other things with the same specific gravity. My Mother, who was born and grew up in Denmark, remembers wearing rubber boots (or sometimes even being barefoot) having fun searching for amber washed up on the beach. Sometimes she would be lucky! Amber is very light and weighs only one-third of a stone. Stones always feel colder than amber, and amber is soft. Organic matter (plants, air bubbles, wood, flowers) and inclusions (ants, spiders, hair) can often be seen in amber. Depending upon conditions when formed, amber can be found in many colors--whitish color, pale lemon yellow, brown, red, green, and almost black. Rare blue amber can be found in the Dominican Republic. Amber is said to carry a sunny energy likely due to its natural golden color, and it is used to eliminate negative energy, So, heres to sunny dispositions and positive outlooks!! Heres to Amber!!
