AmeriCorps Learning Center Specialist Description The AmeriCorps Learning Center Specialist will assist and facilitate the educational program at the Learning Service Center by carrying out the following specific duties as well as assist with alumni coordination and outreach. The Learning Center Specialist will be under the immediate supervision of the Program Director who will delegate and coordinate the tasks and duties as well as monitor the workload and performance. The Learning Center Specialist is expected to serve 40 hours a week but may be asked to serve some weekends and evenings. This is a full-time AmeriCorps service position. As an AmeriCorps member, the Learning Center Specialist is not an employee of Young Detroit Builders and is not subject to the policies and benefits in the Employee Handbook. Instead they are subject to the policies of the AmeriCorps Member Contract. Specific Duties include: 1. Provide support to teachers and other LSC staff as an aide to facilitating the schedule and events; 2. Research and locate speakers and special resources for workshop topics in job readiness and life skills; 3. Develop a protocol for scheduling building maintenance and light repair projects; 4. Assist Program Director in monitoring the condition of the facility 5. Research information for field trips and assist staff on field trips; 6. Maintain inventory of supplies and materials in the Learning Center and notify appropriate staff when ordering is needed; 7. Create displays that include positive messages, affirmations, bulletin boards and other informational notices that benefit trainees and staff in the LSC; 8. Under the direction and supervision of the Job Developer, assist in compiling and posting employment ads and surveying web sites for graduate job placements; 9. Assist Tutor Coordinator in developing the tutoring schedule and coordinating tutor activities; 10. Provide support to community service projects; 11. Produce and solicit articles, photos, and information for monthly e-newsletter; 12. Update and maintain Young Detroit Builders web site; 13. Prepare and update as needed informational packets about the organization and respond to requests for information; 14. Assist in the development of promotional materials and information; 15. Compile and prepare monthly program calendars of activities and important events; 16. Assist in public relations, promotion, and outreach as directed. Qualifications 1. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university; 2. Valid driver’s license; 3. Commitment to the concept and principles of national community service; 4. Willingness to carry out the work tasks delegated; 5. Ability to follow directions and complete detailed tasks accurately; 6. Ability to work well with diverse people and tasks; 7. Sensitivity to young people and their needs; 8. Willingness to accept and complete job tasks with a positive and enthusiastic attitude and manner; 9. Willingness to be supportive of Young Detroit Builders’ programs, goals, and methods; 10. Able to work cooperatively and act as team player; 11. Dependability and reliability for being on time, in attendance and ready to work; 12. Good reading, writing, and communication skills. Benefits Young Detroit Builders provides a living allowance based upon $12,750 annually for this position. Health insurance, child care benefits if eligible, and an educational award of $5,500 upon the completion of 1,700 hours of service are also provided.
