America is having some rough times. Folks out of work, folks going hungry and homeless. A woman I only just met was just telling me: “I go to the soup kitchens during the holidays to help out and always be there just to give thanks for what I have and just to see a smile on someones face. I dont have much but Im always there for someone to help make their lives a little bit better.” To me, this woman sums up what is great about the American spirit. To give what you have in times of need to your neighbor, even if times are tough for you as well. I could relate, because when I was younger, I worked with the Diggers in the Panhandle in San Francisco, during the Summer of Love in 1967, handing out free soup to the hungry Flower Children. I was 11 years old, but I believed in those values of Peace and peaceful change. Then I saw those same innocent and idealistic folks gunned down by the National Guard at Kent State. I saw America galvanized, outraged. I saw Watergate happen, and then I saw Watergate forgotten. Then years and years of broken promises to the Working People, and Wars, and more Wars, and Wall Street bailed out, and the American People forgotten. We knew about struggle back in the Sixties, and about how the proper response to tyranny was to battle it with the moral force of a Great nation, built up out of great citizens. We knew that when the boots of oppression and of the robber barons came down to stomp on the aspirations and the Freedoms of the American working people, that the proper response was to rise up and say NO! Somebody once said – “Love thy neighbor.” Let’s make our whole country a neighborhood, and put smiles on everybody’s faces.
