American Cold War Veterans 2 mins · Brian Hennessey People used ask me when I came home on leave what was it like being in the military. I remember the answer i would give them. In the beginning it was tough but once you got passed the training it was like being in the biggest family in history . Everyone was a close family member. It didnt matter what color you were or whatever part of the US you came from. We called ourselves GIS . Government issued . We gave up our rights that civilians have to protect them . We lived by a different set of rules. We all took a oath to protect and defend . We didnt think of ourselves when we had a buddy in trouble we all jumped in too help .if you really want to no what its like to be in the military I said with a smile join us. Because that is the only way you can understand. When you March in formation at your graduation from Basic Training and AIT and you know that the uniform your wearing wasnt given to you freely you had to pay for it with your sweat and sore muscles blisters on your feet and maybe even a few tears . You can now call yourself a member of the military. It doesnt come easy.
