American Hustle is a David O. Russell film (with the same leading stars as his acclaimed Silver Linings Playbook), a fictionalization of the Abscam scandal of the late 1970s and early 1980s. It has a flavor reminiscent of recent Woody Allen films such as Blue Jasmine, Quentin Tarantino films without the blood are gore, add a dash of Ridley Scotts flavor of nihilism, in a romp into that cheesy 70s to 80s crossover era. Its funny, gross, mesmerizing and tragic, and tastes like one of those fake-crab rolls at a sushi joint. Youll see what I mean. It makes a powerful statement that we humans as a species are batsh*t crazy (I wonder how were not extinct), in a sardonically humorous way. It got an uncharacteristically high rating from the hypercritical audience at IMDb, and I think youll like it for its humorous object lessons about our dysfunctional civilization.
