America’s climate allows farmers from across the country to grow - TopicsExpress

America’s climate allows farmers from across the country to grow cane sugar in tropical states and beet sugar in more temperate states — a luxury that few other countries possess. At the same time, the United States leads the world in the production — and consumption — of the laboratory-made sweetener, high-fructose corn syrup, according to a recent report from Credit Suisse Research. Besides sugar and high-fructose corn syrup, added sweeteners lurk on nutrition labels under names including brown rice syrup, fructose, glucose, corn sweetener, maltodextrin, evaporated cane juice and much more, Alissa Rumsey, a registered dietician at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center told Weather. So just because a food item doesn’t list sugar as an ingredient doesn’t mean it’s not there. Because sugar consumption has been linked to weight gain and obesity, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, cognitive decline and Alzheimer’s, high blood pressure and even depression and mood swings, watching the amount of sugar in your food is essential for your health.
