Amidst a lot of turmoil, my birthday today has been a reminder that people are what make a life. All day, my students and colleagues made me feel special. Text messages from family and my oldest and dearest friends chimed in regularly. I caught up with one of my best friends at happy hour after work. I came home to gifts of massage and wine and clothes from Lexie and Ethan and Jeff. Dinner was perfect at my sisters house - my favorite guacamole and cake from the Suisse Shop and one of my favorite Chardonnays (and we had things other than guacamole, cake, and wine:). Then I sit down to Facebook. And I receive the gift of memories. On my timeline, I see birthday wishes from past students, present students parents, former teachers, former classmates, sorority sisters, neighbors, past neighbors, current colleagues, past colleagues, high school friends, friends from my freshman dorm, synchronized swimmers, friends from Lexies dance days. With every name comes fond and warm memories - of what we did together, shared with each other. Counting so many people as friends, and as family, is really very cool. It makes me feel happy inside, and grateful. Thank you so much to you all. The turmoil is that my mom is very sick. Right now, she doesnt realize that she missed my birthday for the first time in her, and my, life. When she does, I think its going to bum her out. So I think I will celebrate my half-birthday with her this year. So thats April 8th. I am counting on it.
