Amidst the din of trumpets, drums and chants, the 120-year old Sri Senpaga Vinayagar Temple in Ceylon Road was consecrated. This energised the temple and deities. The devotees were energised too. So was the GOH. I witnessed the last consecration 12 years ago; I pray to be there 12 years from now! The temple is in the midst of a private residential estate. The roads are narrow; new condominiums are being built; the temple is expanding. There will be daily chanting, beating of drums and blowing of trumpets. More traffic will crowd the narrow roads. The temple officials have taken steps to mitigate noise and manage traffic. Still, residents will have to accept, understand and be tolerant of some inconveniences. They cannot say “NIMBY”. The temple was there before them! This is a good example of tolerance and harmony when living cheek by jowl. --- gct
