Amilcare Ponchielli, was an Italian composer born on August 31, 1834 in what is now Ponchielli, Italy. He was a prolific composer and was well liked in his time, but the only piece of his that is performed regularly today is Gioconda. Everyone knows the Dance of Hours from it thanks to Disneys Fantasia and Allan Shermans song, Hello Muddah, Hello Fadduh. Ponchielli was a truly gifted composer who could have achieved more popularity were it not for his humble, kind demeanor, and lack of personal ambition.
