Amul adopts business intelligence system ANAND: In a year, each of the nearly 80 lakh cows and buffaloes that make you enjoy your morning ?cuppa would have been tagged. The fat of this milk poured by nearly 3.3 million farmers at 17,000 village-level milk mandalis across Gujarat would be automatically known at Indias milk capital ? Anand. Movement of thousands of bulk milk coolers and vehicles transporting milk to nearly 55 dairy processing plants across the country will be monitored and sale of two crore milk pouches or lassi bottles from a million retail outlets will be known instantly. This will be worlds largest IT integration in dairy co-operative sector with the marketers of brand Amul ? Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) automating all its business processes through a 10-year deal worth Rs 80 crore. In the first phase, 13 district dairy unions and GCMMF have already implemented Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) application linking the two. In phase two, GCMMF and IBM are pursuing distribution management system to establish a link between 58 depots and one million retailers. Cattle tagging for building a cattle database and health record management to support and improve the animal husbandry services provided to millions of farmers will be completed in phase three within the next one year, said Sodhi, adding that the system will help doctors reach on time to provide veterinary services to animals. By adopting the business intelligence system, Amul has raised the bar for the country. It will be beneficial not only in terms of transparency and governance of co-operatives but also for the government which can start looking at subsidies and grants to formulate policies that benefits all, said Vanitha Narayanan, managing director India of IBM.
