Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and multiple sclerosis (MS) are neurodegenerative diseases that impact the central nervous system. Both diseases attack the body’s nerves and muscles. In many ways, these two diseases are very similar. However, key differences determine a lot about treatment and outlook. The prevalence of MS is estimated to 2/100,000 population in Malaysia. It is seen in all the three main ethnic groups; Chinese, Malays and Indians, but with higher prevalence among ethnic Chinese. There is high F:M ratio of 6.6:1. None has a family history of similar illness. The average age of onset of symptom was 31 years. 50% of patients presented with a myelopathy, 59% of the relapses involved the spinal cord, 97% of patients had myelopathy at sometime of the illness.
