Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as Lou - TopicsExpress

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as Lou Gehrigs Disease, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS eventually leads to their death. When the motor neurons die, the ability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement is lost. With voluntary muscle action progressively affected, patients in the later stages of the disease may become totally paralyzed. Ive seen a lot of people complain about the ice bucket challenge. And thats your choice.. But if you yourself had this killer disease, would you still complain? Ive also heard a lot of people complain about not recognizing other disease. And I can understand that. I support Alzheimer research the most. But a lot of people dont know what ALS is. A lot of diseases can be cured, ALS cant be. You cant prevent it, you cant slow it down and you stop it. Its ultimately what will kill you. So please stop complaining about the ice bucket challenge. Its a fun way to raise awareness and funds for a terrifying disease. Be kind. (:
