An Excerpt from “Embracing Grace” by: Daniel A Brown When people only read small sections of the Old Testament at a time—and don’t grasp the entire story—they miss the simple truth that Gods judgments always include promises. The judgments of God contain provisions for deliverance. God certainly does censure people’s past (and present) behavior and rebuke people for their sin, but if you keep reading in your Bible, you will discover that every sentence He declares against His people is always accompanied with PROMISES for their future. When He passes sentence and renders a verdict of guilt, He is NOT finished with us. Remember, He is quite accustomed to working with guilty people. Much like a physician reaching a conclusive diagnosis about a patient, God specifies our infection/guilt—and begins to treat it. God uses judgment to change people and their destiny. That process—determining guilt but finding a way to restore the guilty one to innocence—is the essence of redemption. If you view the Old Testament as a process of God redeeming/restoring humanity—instead of just condemning it—you will begin to understand how Grace and the Law work together. God’s judgment has a purpose, a promise. He uses conviction and judgment as elements of redemption to restore His people and to change their future!
