An Gorta Mor or the great hunger ( 1845-1852 ) is a perfect example of monoculture in its most dangerous form. Hitting Irelands potato crop based on the Irish lumper ,which was the core of the caloric intake of the people , it killed one million people and was exacerbated by genocidal and racist policies from London bent on clearing the countryside of undesirables . Its interesting to note while the people suffered, exports continued in the form of grain, produce , meat and taxes forced by an English absentee landlord system that continued to drain the local economy and often forced evictions were common. We take this time to remember those lost to this horrid famine ....
