An Open Letter to Mr.Gil Paterson, SNP, MSP Dear Mr.Paterson, The Referendum - A High Risk Reckless Gamble There are three fundamental flaws in Alex Salmond’s proposals:- 1) the currency to be used 2) the issue of EU membership 3) the costs, complexities and risks of establishing a separated Scotland. Salmond knows full well that a continuing currency union with the UK would not be feasible but he is also well aware that Scots and Scottish businesses want to keep using the pound sterling. A continuing currency union would require monetary and fiscal control of the economy of a separated Scotland by the Bank of England ( BoE ) but this has been rejected by Salmond and thereby also the sanction by the BoE of the continued use of the pound sterling. Despite the deceit and dissembling by Salmond, the situation regarding the EU is perfectly clear as specified in the letter to the SNP from the EU – a separated Scotland would be out of the EU and the date and terms of entry would only be determined on an application for membership being made. Anything else is pure speculation and supposition. A prolonged period out of the EU would have major consequences for the economy of a separated Scotland. Salmond’s proposals fail completely to include an estimate of the costs of establishing the necessary infrastructure of a separated Scotland. Such expenditure would have to be met by Scottish taxpayers. Furthermore Salmond has stated that this information will not be provided to Scots before the referendum. The answers to these critical issues, currency, EU membership, set-up costs would not become known until after the referendum – ie Salmond is trying to entice voters to accept a “Pig in a Poke” of unsubstantiated assertions and wishful thinking. Acceptance of these proposals would be a high risk reckless gamble that would not be in the best interests of Scots or Scotland. In view of the above I trust you will desist in promoting these discredited, ill-considered, unfounded proposals to your constituents. Yours sincerely, Alan Ingram References:- 1.
