An Open Letter to President LaForge #3 Dear President - TopicsExpress

An Open Letter to President LaForge #3 Dear President Laforge, We have not met, but my daughter is a recent DSU graduate and loved her professors and overall experience there. She was also a graduate assistant while pursuing her masters. Although I am a graduate of Ole Miss, I recognize Delta State to be a fine institution of learning and one that should make us all proud. My colleagues at UMC Medical Center tell me that Delta State is one of the top schools that demands respect when reviewing applicants to the medical and dental programs. Irrespective of the strong reputation that Delta State has earned, we realize that the need to further and continually improve the school necessitates change. We were all very excited about the changes you would implement...that is, until we learned of the removal of Dr. Bill Hays as chairman of the language and literature department! I’m betting that this was not a decision of yours directly, and if not, I urge you to not allow this change of the chair to proceed. From my daughter to several friends who are DSU alumni, including two who are presently in the MALS program, all have expressed shock and concern that a man of his stature would be summarily dismissed from such an important position. From what I can ascertain from all of the people mentioned above, few men possess the integrity, leadership, and intelligence of Dr. Hays, along with unrivaled concern for his students and staff. This is a rare combination indeed and one that should be embraced by your administration. Bill Hays, the Lang and Lit professors, and the department as a whole are a shining star for your institution. Much credit for that has to be Bill Hays’. This man has accomplished so much and positively affected so many students and staff over so many years that it’s just unfathomable that he get dismissed as the chair, especially in the twilight of his career. I implore you to reconsider this decision and reinstate Dr. Hays as the chair. The future of this fine department depends on him being at the helm and on you putting him there. Keep us on course! Cordially, William Wilson
