An Overmountain Victory Wednesday Sept. 24 7:00 PM In 1780 some of the Overmountain Men camped on Mr. Cobbs property on the 24th of September on the march to Kings Mountain. Members of the Overmountain Victory Trail Association each year recreate this historic march by traveling in the footsteps of those Overmountain Men from Abingdon, VA to Kings Mountain, SC . Join them around the campfire at 7:30 PM as they tell the dramatic story of that historic march by the patriots of our area, including William Cobb and his sons. Beforehand, at 7:00 PM their will be a special dedication of the new NPS wayside sign located at Rocky Mount. The Washington County Militia Fife and Drum Corps will be a featured at the dedication. There is no admission charge for the programming. Living History Tours will offered free of charge from 2-6 PM on September 24th. If you havent taken a tour in a while, this is the perfect time! The weather should be beautiful, so take a free tour, bring a picnic dinner, then enjoy the captivating story of Kings Mountain! This program is free to the public through funds provided by the Active Trails Grant received by the OVTA from the National Parks Service. These funds also cover a day program for schools, paying for both their admission and their transportation costs. About two hundred and fifty children from local schools will be coming to Rocky Mount during the day of the 24th to learn about the road to King’s Mountain, and life of the early settlers of the area. They will experience how these pioneers lived, worked and entertained themselves in the 18th century.
