An Unknown God In Acts 17, Paul preached a powerful sermon to people who thought he was a “proclaimer of strange deities” (v. 18). His audience consisted of idol worshippers who believed in many gods. Although they had altars erected to their many gods, they also had one with the inscription, “To An Unknown God.” Perhaps this was out of fear that they could have over-looked some deity and did not want to offend him. Paul uses this altar as a starting point for his sermon where he introduces his audience to this “unknown God.” Here are the facts the apostle lays out... 1. This God made the world (v. 24) 2. He is Lord of heaven and earth (v. 24). 3. He does not dwell in earthly temples (v. 24). 4. He is not served by human hands (v. 25). 5. He gives to all life and breath and all things (v. 25). 6. He made from one man, every nation and determined their times and places of habitation (v. 26). 7. In Him we have our existence (v. 28). 8. The Divine Nature is not like gold or silver (v. 29). The point that Paul wanted these people to see is that they “should seek God,” who has made Himself available, since “He is not far from each one of us” (v. 27). This seeking God requires that “all everywhere should repent” (v. 30), be¬cause “He has fixed a day in which He will judge the world” (v. 31). This is a sermon needed today because God is truly unknown due to the godless teaching of evolution in our post¬modern world. We are now in the third generation of children who are being indoctrinated to believe there is no God. All people need to be warned that there is a “fixed” day in which everyone will stand before God to answer for their deeds. We need to come to know Him... while there is still time.
