CFS staff are encouraged to learn and to lead in their fields. Here are some current examples of how theyre taking advantage of and contributing to professional development activities and organizations: Two CFS math gurus presented at todays North Carolina Association of Independent Schools annual conference at the Concord Convention Center. Current Lower School head Lisa Carboni (a Forest Class teacher whose Curriculum and Instruction Ph.D. had an emphasis in elementary mathematics) and former Lower School head Joan Walker (a Sky Class teacher) spoke about Using Technology to Illuminate Childrens Mathematical Thinking in front of an audience of fellow educators from across the state. Among other CFS attendees, Assistant Principal for Teaching and Learning Renee Prillaman is part of the staff for the 2014-2015 New NCAIS Teacher Cohort Group, which met again at todays conference. She was in Atlanta earlier this week for the Southern Association for Independent Schools annual conference, attending sessions including Attracting a Diverse Faculty, Faculty Evaluation: Redefining Your Approach, and Creating a Culture of Positive Digital Citizenship. Last week, Principal Mike Hanas hosted Durham-area independent school heads here at CFS and then participated in the fall gathering of Friends school heads in Philadelphia. Monday through Wednesday of this week, he hosted two educators, one from New York and one from Rhode Island, as part of their Master’s degree program in Private School Leadership at The Klingenstein Center of Columbia University’s Teachers College. Development Coordinator John Ladd was in Southern Pines Wednesday for a conference on planned giving (philanthropy through retirement, life insurance, and estate designations). Congratulations to him on his election to the Board of the North Carolina Planned Giving Council. Right now, Upper School head Tom Anderson is in Rhode Island for the National Retreat for Academic Leaders, hosted by the Independent Curriculum Group (of which CFS is a founding member). This three-day gathering is for educators tasked with leading initiatives on curriculum and assessment in schools. In a couple of weeks, a number of our Middle School staff will be in Nashville for the Association for Middle Level Education annual conference. And, please stay tuned for more about the important peace education work being led by Christel Greiner Butchart, including todays CFS visit by a George Mason University international peace scholar and tomorrows Peaceful Schools conference for Triangle educators, hosted here at CFS.
