An amazing coincidence! Three years ago I made the image on the right. Later I learned of a photographer, David Ulrich, who teaches at the University of Hawaii, and I visited his website. I was absolutely stunned to see his image (left) made 26 years before I made mine (on right). The location is on the Chain of Craters Road which runs 27 miles from Kilauea to the ocean. The road passes through an endless number of lava flows. The space we photographed is about 7’ wide. The images are almost identical in composition except he was using a 4”X5” view camera and I was using a digital 1”X1.5” camera. I learned he had also studied with Minor White. The coincidence raises interesting questions in the context of Minor’s teachings. Whose inner self is being mirrored? (#3 of challenge)
