An anonymous and malicious SMS I received last Sunday night has prompted me to post on a prevalent regional subject that I thought I would try to avoid by all means. Sy is not Toys enemy, nor is Toy Sys enemy; no matter how much the DA and EFF may wish for it! United by their common membership of the ANC, their collective enemy is counter-revolution manifested in the triple challenges of poverty, unemployment and inequality facing our country in general and our Vaal community in particular. Conference leadership contestation should be seen as a means to delivering on these challenges, wary of the fact that beyond conference we must remain “comrades”, or in other words, inter-dependent members of the same organization that must continue to strive for the deliverance of our people from the bondage of our Apartheid past. Whatever we say to each other today, must of necessity be something that unites us now and beyond the conference; that whatever the conference outcome, we will still be able to comradely look each other in the eye and work together for the 2016 electoral victory of the ANC. My plea is that we all keep our eyes on the historic ANC ball and not make the uniting role of the leadership that is to emerge from conference, a difficult one. The ANC cannot afford a scorched earth campaigning approach; an approach that assumes there is no life after the conference. The outcomes of the envisaged conference, both strategic and structural, are a means to the ANC strategic objective and not its end. To the faceless person that sent me the SMS, and maybe also doing it to others . . . be careful! Assuming your comradeship, your facelessness deprives you of an opportunity for constructive comradely engagement. Your attempts at pushing your candidate or slate may unwittingly aide the counter-revolutionary agenda of the DA and EFF coalition; . . . or maybe, (and this is my worst fear) this is your exact intention?
