An appeal from a former Iowa GOP up-and-comer serving a 60-year prison sentence failed to prove alleged errors made by the district court during his second trial, the Iowa Court of Appeals said today. A jury found Matthew Elliott, 32, guilty in April 2012 of child endangerment causing death and willful injury causing serious injury in the 2008 death of 7-month old Alexis Gilbert. Elliot was first tried and convicted of the crime in 2009, but the Iowa Supreme Court granted him a new trial in December 2011 based on concerns surrounding improper testimony.
