An articulate PM impresses : Kanwar Sandhu The Indian Prime - TopicsExpress

An articulate PM impresses : Kanwar Sandhu The Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modis visit to the United States has been well received. The visit is important because when he was the Chief Minister of Gujarat, he had been denied a visa by the US. And now all gates have been opened for him. Though there have been some critical voices, especially before the US visit over the Gujarat violence, most people feel that he has been able to give a good impression of himself and the nation. Though most of the western media has been more careful on giving an opinion on the visit, there has been a lot of hype in the Indian media. It is ironical that the same media which was gunning for him earlier, is now bending backward to eulogise him. He is being called an iconic figure, a rockstar and what not. I feel that this hype will not exactly be in PM Modis favour as it would raise the hopes and aspirations sky high. The hype apart, he did announce certain long awaited benefits to the NRI community. Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) will get lifetime Indian Visa. In fact the PIO and OCI scheme (Overseas Citizenship of India) have been combined. He also announced Visa On Arrival for tourists holding US passports. He announced that the next Parvasi Divas would be held in Ahmedabad next year. Meanwhile, a delegation of Sikhs who also met him told him about their Visa problems. They explained the problems being faced by the ones who left India in 1980s and sought political asylum there. Though Modi listened to them, he did not make any commitment. All in all, the visit has been well received. It also shows the power of good communications. Finally what comes out of it will be known only in the coming months and years. More so, at home where he has a host of problems to tackle.
