An earlier story about one of our young professionals on placement! Entrepreneurial spirit and student skills’ cover ground in tyre company: VRT Imports is a rapidly growing truck tyre business founded in South Australia. General Manager Mr Tian Fan originally started working for a larger company which had VRT imports as a subsidiary, but when the opportunity to purchase VRT as a separate, stand-alone entity arose, he grabbed the opportunity with both hands and since then the company has expanded interstate. Tian originally took a student from Navitas who’d approached him of her own accord, and when that went well, was agreeable to taking a colleague when the first internship concluded after three months. Now the highly talented Ms Lu Wen (pictured below) is half-way through her placement and the beam on her face says it all. “I learn so much in the workplace!” Lu exclaims. “Tian is a great teacher, and the scope of experiences I’m having is fantastic.” Mr Fan has a finance and accounting background himself, and says the interns usually only need a bit of training before the benefits start to work both ways. “Of course at the start there’s some business training and induction they have to go through,” he said adding, “but that’s the same for any of us in a new position.” “And once I’ve shown them the individual elements to the business’ books, they are able to work fairly independently and learn to think on their feet in real-world situations.” Lu Wen’s academic background is literal as well as fiscal. “In my university in China, I interviewed and wrote media articles about our university sporting teams for our paper and some of them were published in the city paper. Later I edited my colleagues’ articles too,” Wen said. “I bet when she started university in Adelaide, she never thought she’d be doing an internship in a truck-tyre company!” Tian laughed. Wen agreed, adding “Tian has shown me that personal versatility which helps us see opportunities that others can’t.” “Maybe one day I’ll be an entrepreneur too!” she laughed.
