An email and phone call blitz request from Jan Medaris: Extremely Urgent Action Asylum seekers from Villawood (near Sydney) Immigration Detention Centre are to be shipped to Curtin, one of the most remote and harsh centres that we have on the edge of the desert in Western Australia. They were only told yesterday (March 31, 2014). They have to go on Thursday. The Department of Immigration has recently breached the privacy of some 10,000 people seeking asylum in Australia. This breach puts a great many of these people at risk if they were to return to their own countries or risks the well-being of remaining family members. The legal push against the breach of security has been spearheaded from Sydney. It is a great embarrassment to a government that has been far from transparent with the Australian people and the cruel treatment of people who are being held in detention centres in Australia and overseas (Nauru and Papua New Guinea). Whilst hiding what it is doing by secrecy, it has failed to maintain the privacy of people supposedly in its care and exposed 1000’s of people to danger. Now the nastiness continues as it seems that the Minister for Immigration and Border Protection is about to remove people from Villawood to Curtin so that they cannot have access to their legal supporters and other support networks. Many after prolonged detention, years in some cases, are at significant risk for their mental health. The claim is that renovations are being done at Villawood but the truth is that a number of new wings are ready to be opened in a few weeks. Why not wait until they are completed and keep the people where they can still have access to their legal and emotional supports? Why waste more tax-payers’ money to move these people when this government has been blaming the previous government for its waste of public money? Why waste this money when the government is also taking away funding from other groups in the community in order to save money? The government is hoping to break these people so that they will give up …. and go home. Let’s raise our voices against this. Let’s break the silence. Please protest this action. Please ring the Minister, Scott Morrison. Call Parliament House (02 6277 7111) for Scott Morrison’s office. If a voice mail comes on leave a message. Call his Electoral Office on 02 9523 0339.
