An emotional day at the Plano Animal Shelter, as an abandoned dog adopted and trained by a Plano Animal Services employee was presented to Army Sergeant Michael Barker by the Rebuilding Warriors program. Michael’s service canine, Missy, was found as a stray in Lawton, Oklahoma, and no owner ever came to reclaim her. The shelter there was going to euthanize her but instead asked the Plano Animal Shelter if they could take her in and find her a new home. Once in the shelter, she was evaluated by a Plano Animal Services employee who trains canines for the Rebuilding Warriors program and was identified as a possible service canine candidate. After seven months of training she is now ready to assist Sgt. Barker in his daily life as a certified service canine. Her story illustrates the fact that shelters are full of wonderful pets with limitless capabilities.
