An estimated 3,000 men perished from starvation, exposure and disease while encamped at Valley Forge during that horrible winter of 1777-1778. An estimated 10,000* died in camps during the Revolutionary War. 8,500* men are estimated to have died in prison. The infamous Hudson River prison ships account for nearly 7,000. While the total dead (25,188) may appear a small number of casualties, it actually represents .9 % of the population of the United States at that time. (In 1975, when the book used was published, .9% of the U.S. population would have been 1,935,000 people.) The Civil War, our bloodiest conflict, took its toll on 1.6% of the total population. Sedgewick Archives, Lee M. White, The American Revolution In Notes, Quotes and Anecdotes, page 31 (1975). *Numbers increased with more recent research.
