An example of "intermittent and unpredictable" in our neighborhood. The Boardman coal plant is suddenly down for at least a month with no warning at a time of peak summer demand. "Variable and predictable", especially when from many smaller distributed generators that are not correlated in output is looking pretty good by comparison. Boardman was unexpectedly down for a long period back in 2006 also.
